Design professionals joined forces to transform Nantucket’s 1804 Charles Hussey house into a first-rate showpiece.
Excerpt:
During the 18th and 19th centuries, sea captains from Nantucket traveled the world, caught whales, engaged in trade, and often brought back tremendous fortunes. By the late 1790, Nan-tucketer William Rotch forged an American trade route to the Pacific Ocean. Soon afterwards, residents of the island further augmented their wealth when a route was established to the Indian Ocean. During this time period, India Street --- named for the profitable trade route --- was home to some of Nantucket’s affluent citizens.
Scattered along India Street were typical houses of that era: two-and-half stories high and built in the timber frame tradition. The structures, solidly constructed out of high-quality materials, contained no extraneous features. The design was very plain yet successful, much like the Nantucket Quakers themselves....
